Ford SVT Thunder Expedition

In 2000, the SVT Lightning pickup was in its seventh year of production. This niche performance pickup had a devout following, and Ford was producing 5000 units for that year. What was absent from the Ford lineup was a high performance SUV.

The Expedition provided the most logical platform since is shares parts with the F-150. Thunder was born. Swapping in the Lightning’s go-fast parts wasn’t easy though. Tweaks were needed throughout—enough to limit the potential for production status.

As a prototype, the truck is buttoned up nicely—dressed in a matter befitting its beastly power upgrade. What better than a monochromatic black scheme to say hazardous horsepower ahead? Inside, the theme changes as creature comfort takes center stage. The tan Lightning leather buckets are as creamy as they look.

Underhood, the Thunder’s rumble is provided by the same supercharged 5.4L SOHC V-8 used in the Lightning, which pumps out 360 hp and 440 lb-ft of torque. With virtually zero wheelspin, the short hop to 60 takes just 5.6 sec. (A stock Expedition needs 9.2.) Thunder, then somehow ignoring aerodynamics laws, gobbles the quarter mile in 14.1 sec at 97.8 mph.

The Thunder is more than a monster motor in search of a decent chassis. This truck changes highway lanes with the precision and low roll of a good sport sedan. SVT borrowed the Lightning’s giant P295/45ZR18 Goodyear Eagle F1 GS tires, 9.5-in.-wide five-spoke aluminum wheels, lower-rate front and rear coil springs, Bilstein monotube gas shocks, and stiffer front and rear anti-roll bars. The Thunder has a huge handling advantage, feels much crisper around town, and stopped shorter than stock, thanks to the upgraded brakes.

Sadly, the Ford SVT Thunder Expedition never went into production. And after 2004, even the Ford Lightning was gone.
